Finding the best spot for your hub
One of the most important decisions you will make with your Staples Connect system is where to place the hub. There are hundreds of choices. Any location in your home that’s within reach of an outlet or power strip is on the table. And since home automation uses mesh networking, you have a wide range of options available to you.
So what’s the best option?
It may sound boring but the best place for your hub is in the rough center of your devices. There are other considerations (and we’ll get to them later) but generally speaking, you’ll get the best performance out of your hub if it’s in the middle of your devices.
There’s a few reasons for this. First, it will make your hub feel faster. A piece of tech equipment feels fast when there’s no delay between the command and the response. See a button, push a button, device immediately responds.
The hub connects with devices in two ways: by itself and through devices. When it connects through another device, the signal has to travel a path from the hub through the connecting device to the final device. This takes small amounts of time but our brains notice that small amount of time. A shorter path is better. When you place the hub in a central location, you allow the hub to make many connections by itself, reducing the number of connections it has to make through other devices. This results in fewer long paths, which makes the hub feel faster.
Also, make sure that you don’t place the hub in a corner with two stone walls or behind some impenetrable object. The hub needs to be able to send and receive signals. If you put the hub in a place where sending and receiving signals is difficult, it won’t work well. Don’t do this.
Placing your hub in the middle of your devices will make your whole system seem better. It’s one of the simple, powerful tricks you can use to get the most out of your Staples Connect hub.
